(And the copy of Kale's lab board. Brown is me, pink/standard is Zelda.)

"Wow..." Kale stood at the base of the hill, gazing upwards. He could just see the walls of the laboratory - and everything else in the giant complex - reaching upwards, touching the sky. So high up! The seventeen year-old was exhilirated, and he hadn't even placed one foot on the hillside yet. But that was how he was; putting so much emphasis on wonder and joy, and hiding sorrow and pain. It made it easier for everyone except himself, and he preferred things that way.
But his sense of wonder here wasn't faked. Since he was young, Kale had had a love of height. Scaling cliffs, repelling down waterfalls... that was the life he dreamed of. That, and art. He gathered tiny things, trash to others, and once he had collected enough he used his instincts to transform these scattered items into works of art. He was no famous artist, he was a farm boy who had just left his home - but that couldn't stop him from trying.
He began to travel up the hill, anticipation growing within him. His amber eyes sparkled, standing out against his fair skin and dark brown hair. After years spent in a life he'd despised, he was free - and greatly looking forwards to getting his first pokemon. There had been none on the farm, but from what he had heard pokemon sounded like the perfect companions. And he couldn't wait to see what contests were like - he could never resist trying a new art form.
His long legs and steady stride carried him quickly, and with every step Kale Uzen grew closer to what he regarded as no less than his future. And soon enough... there he was, at the top of the hill. A little out of breath, true, but he didn't mind. Nor did he mind that he knees ached. There were much more important things to bother about.
He pressed down on the buzzer. "Hello?" he called into the machine, as his amber eyes gazed through time.

He pressed down on the buzzer. "Hello?" he called into the machine, as his amber eyes gazed through time.
The assistant jumped at first when she heard the voice coming from the speaker. She wiped suprise from her face and put on a smile, heading towards the door. Her short hair was resting on her shoulders in braids, dark brown hair contrasting with the white lab coat. Underneath the coat was a baby blue skinny tee with an Eevee on it. The assistant opened the door. "Welcome to Professor Cherrywood's Laboratory. I assume you are here for your first Pokémon?" Her short skirt bounced when she turned, so Professor Cherrywood always made her wear leggings with them. "Follow me." she motioned, and walked over ot a little area of the room with what looked like a baby pen(not the writing pen. xD). It had a little pond on one half, with little Remoraids in it, and on the other half Seedots were running around and playing. One Seedot was looking into the water, precariously leaning towards it. "Don't worry, there is one more type of Pokémon, they're outside...Unless you're interested in one of these?"
Kale nodded and followed the assistant, a smile growing on his face as the pokemon came into his sight. He watched their antics for a little while, trying to picture each one of the pokemon coming with him. He let his eyes stray across them for a moment, then turned to the assistant again.
"I'd like to take a look at the other one, too, please," he said calmly. He didn't want to rush into a decision when it was something as important as this, so he wanted to consider everything he could before deciding - well, everything within reason, of course. And h figured taking a look at the third type of pokemon was well within reason!

She led him outside, to a small, fenced in area about 10x10 feet, with knee-high grass inside, and four fire-type Pokémon. Three of them whinied with suprise when the two people approached them. "These are our Ponyta. Oh, by the way, I'm Kiara." Kiara added. One Ponyta ignored them, the one who wasn't suprised by them, continuing to graze. One ear was slightly nicked and he walked with a little limp. "So, take your time deciding." she said cheerfully, standing aside from the fence so he could look at the Pokémon.
Kale took a deep breath of the air, enjoying the freshness. Stepping forwards, he walked over to the fence and rested his arms upon the top, amber eyes reflecting the fire of the Ponyta. His eyes lingered mostly on the one which hadn't been disturbed by their coming, and mostly on its leg.
"Well, what do you know," he murmured softly to himself, chuckling. He turned back to the Kiara. "Thank you for all your help, Kiara. If I may, I'd like this one," he said, gesturing to the limping Ponyta.
So much for taking time to decide. But I've always been impulsive, why stop now? He grinned. I'm not sure what that's going to say for the rest of my journey, though.

Kiara frowned a little in thought. "Are you sure you want that Ponyta? He's...he's...different from the others, to say the least. After what happened to him when he was just a hatchling..." She trailed off, then said, "So you want this Pokémon?" She fiddled with one of her braids nervously. I don't know if this is the right Pokémon for him...If something happens, the Professor will never forgive me... she thought. "You are positive you want him? If so, then I'll get him out of the pen and take a picture of you two."
Kale paused for a moment at her warning, but then shook his head. "I'm fine with different," he said. "Anyway, this is an adventure. Different is what I came here for." His words were carefree, but his tone was serious. He met Kiara's nervous gaze, his eyes showing his determination. "If he's normal enough to be out here with the others, then he's normal enough for me." He let his serious expression fade into a smile again. "So yes, I would like this Pokemon."
(Zelda, how do you do the "e" thing for Pokemon? XD)

"Okay." she nodded, smiling slightly, and opened up the gate to the pen. The other three Ponyta hurried to her, but she nudged them away. "Not you." she murmured. Kiara made her way slowly to the other Ponyta, and put her hand on his shoulder. (Do horses have shoulders? o.o;) He jumped slightly with suprise, then allowed her to lead him out to Kale. "Ponyta, this is Kale." she told the horse Pokémon.
Ponyta snorted and eyed his soon-to-be master. He nodded a bit, and swished his tail with consent, as if saying, He'll do.
"I'll go get the camera and other things you'll need. Get acquainted!" she hurried back inside.

(Yes, Zelda, horses have shoulders. XD)
Kale's smile stretched wider at the Ponyta's gestures after his introduction by Kiara. "Pleased to meet you," he said with the flourish of a bow, in fun but still holding a touch of a grandiose feel. As Kiara hurried back into the building, Kale turned to follow her with his eyes, but at her words he turned forwards again to face the Ponyta in front of him. Holding one hand up to the Pokemon, he reached up and placed the other on the Ponyta's shoulder as Kiara had done, aware of and keeping away from the flames that traveled across the top of its beige pelt.

(Oh, and how to do the é is this: You can't do it on a laptop, though.
Hold the Alt button and in the side number pad thing type in 130 then let go of the alt button.)
Ponyta snorted a little when Kale touched him, but did not mind after a couple seconds. He turned to look at Kale again, at his face, and whinied. The Pokémon seemed to know this person accepted his difference. Unlike the others...
[shadow=gray,left,300]-flashback-
'What's wrong with that Ponyta? He has a cut in his ear!'
'It has a limp, let's look at some other Pokémon.'
'He isn't suitable for riding.'
'That thing looks like it would collapse as soon as you got on its back! That one over there looks better than this one.'
-end flashback-[/shadow]
He scuffed his hoof against the dirt. His body tensed, ready to kick.
Kiara returned just in time. She knew that pose of the Pokémon. The girl dropped the bag with the supplies in it and called, "Watch out, he's going to kick!"

(Okay, thanks. ^^)
Kale's touch became a bit more bold after Ponyta seemed to have adjusted to the strange person a little more, feeling accepted by the Ponyta just as the Pokémon did by him.
Kale turned around, surprised at the sound of Kiara's shout. As his mind comprehended the meaning of her words, he quickly wheeled back around to face Ponyta. Thinking quickly, he decided that diplomacy might not be the best choice here (especially since he had no idea as to what had sparked the Pokémon's sudden change in mood), so he took the other route of jumping backwards and to the side, hoping that his momentum would be enough to get him out of the range of the fiery Pokémon and ignoring the protest of his knees at so much quick motion.

Ponyta kicked, and missed. He pawed at the ground again, and snorted, then seemed to calm down again. He relaxed his muscles, and looked at Kale like, 'What's wrong?'
Kiara walked over to Ponyta again, and stroaked his neck. "He has his moments. Befriending him will definately help him forget about the bad times of his earlier life...See, he wasn't born here at the lab. The Professor saved him from some kind of auction, but he still won't forget about how they hurt him...And insulted him..." She paused. "He's fine now, you can get near him again." The girl took out the camera, and got it ready.

Kale stood in silence as Kiara explained Ponyta's behavior, then at her reassuring went up to the Pokémon again. He stood on his left side and placed his hand on Ponyta's shoulder again. "You must have had it pretty badly, back there. But don't worry, that's all the past. This'll be a new start for the both of us."
Seeing the camera, he turned forwards. "Picture time?" he questioned, putting on a sort of nervous smile. He had never been very good with cameras - things always came out too... well, too absolutely real looking. He didn't really mind the things, though, mostly he was hoping that Ponyta wouldn't mind them too much either.
It's not quite the same as I imagined, but it's probably better. We'll work together, then, and see how far we can make it.

Ponyta looked up at its new master, and the camera flashed. It jumped a little, then settled when it realized it was a harmless flash. It watched the picture float from the camera, and Kiara picked it up.
"Oh, that's a great picture!" she exclaimed, showing it to Kale and Ponyta. "And I'll have to get you to fill out some forms and then you're all set after I give you a couple things..." The girl handed the new trainer some papers and a pen.

Kale blinked several times to clear the afterimage of the flash from his eyes, trying to clearly view the picture despite his eyes' protest. Soon enough, however, his vision had cleared, and he smiled at the picture of himself and Ponyta. "Not bad, huh?" he asked the Pokémon.
A moment later, he found paper and a pen thrust into his hands, and he hastily grabbed them. He stared down at the papers, having not expected there to have been so much procedure surrounding this. But of course, he reminded himself, they had been doing this for a long time, and it was of the utmost importance. A few papers he could handle. And holding them in his hand was like proof that he was actually here, that his journey had begun... or was about to begin. Finding the start of the thing would be nigh impossible, as everything he had ever done had led him to this point. Had he taken one different step, he might not be here. Compared to those odds, forms were a piece of cake.

Ponyta looked at the picture, unsure of what it was, and why it had a mirror image of himself and his new trainer. The fire Pokémon whinied with contentness and nudged Kale's arm with his muzzle a little.
Kiara grinned. "He likes you already. I can tell you're going to be great friends." she said, pulling out items from the bag. "For your journey, you will recieve a Pokédex, to keep track of all the Pokémon you've seen, a map, so you don't get lost, an instruction manual, that has information about basically anything you need to know about your Pokémon, where you can find certain things, and battle tips. And finally, your ID." She stuck the picture onto a card and handed it to Kale. "You're an official Moon Forest trainer now. How does it feel?" she asked jokingly.

Kale nudged Ponyta in response, placing his hand on the Pokémon's shoulder again. His grin matched Kiara's perfectly. He'd done a lot of exciting things in his life, scattered between the long days of farm work and solitary confinement (when he refused to do farm work), but something like this was entirely new to him. Coming from the outskirts of a small town, he hadn't known many humans, and had only seen a handful of different types of Pokémon!
His eyes ran across the map, scanning the unfamiliar territory. His home was so far away, itself becoming a dream as Moon Forest manifested into a reality. He grasped his ID and looked at his picture for a moment more. He looked the same as he had looked before coming, but everything else, everything around him was different. How did it feel? It felt like all of Moon Forest was his to explore, that each Pokémon, human, and part of nature awaited him, that he had attained the highest form of freedom.
"Good," he finally decided to say. "It feels very good."

Kiara shrugged. "That's good. Okay, then, I guess you two are ready to go." She smiled. "I'm always happy when I see a trainer go with their new Pokémon, but at the same time, I get sad. I guess it's bitter sweet." She smiled. "Good luck. And you too, Ponyta."

Likes – flowers, grass, dusk/dawn, lights
Dislikes – rocks, enclosed spaces, loud noises
History/Background: Ponyta was born on a small breeding farm, and purchased as soon as he was old enough to be separated from his parents – though likely before he should have been. And in the same way, he tasked with much more than he should have done. As Ponyta are born with weak legs, it only took one stumble on rocky ground for him to hurt his leg enough to give him the limp that caused him to be put up in an auction.
There was a viewing before the adoption. Placed in a small pen, the young Pokémon gazed out with wide eyes at all the people passing by, putting a value to each ‘display’. But he was only met my cruel or disappointed eyes – no one wanted a lame Ponyta! And with his limp, that was all he appeared to be. Alone, confused, and unwanted, he developed a resentment for the uncaring faces who passed by.
But then his fate changed for the better. Professor Cherrywood won the auction for him and brought him back to the lab. Though at first hard to handle, over time he grew accustomed to his new home and settled in. However, he never lost his stubbornness, nor did he hesitate to rage against anything that reminded him of his past.
Personality: Most of the time calm and quiet, he is immensely stubborn, sometimes to the point of stupidity. He rarely expresses either extreme happiness or extreme sorrow, though he is very able to experience both. He normally has good self control over himself (except when blinded by stubbornness), but may become extremely angered if someone does something that really gets to him. Not the most sweet or endearing Pokémon, he still has plenty of care and love to give… he’s just a little more hesitant about giving it.

Perfect! ^o^ Looks good to me. Post it in Kale's backpack if you didn't already.
(Okay, I'll go do that.)
"You hear that, Ponyta?" asked Kale. "Now we've got a whole region just waiting for us." He turned back to Kiara and smiled. "Well, you never know, maybe we'll come back and visit sometime," he said.

"You're welcome anytime." she blushed a bit. "I'm so glad Ponyta has found a loving master..." Kiara nodded to both of them. "Don't just stand here, go, before you change your mind."

Turning and waving, Kale and Ponyta walked back into the laboratory, then outside. With a glance at the map, Kale headed downwards along the path towards Route One, Ponyta walking at his side.
